So to recap. There's no stain and no smell but youre worried about the stain and the smell? Just kidding.
I think normally the thing to have done is put white wine or lots of salt on the original stain rather than detergent.
I once spilled a bottle of wine on a priceless persian rug and the owner actually spread natural yoghurt on the stain, waited for it to dry and then scraped it off. There was no sign of the stain and the carpet was in mint condition again.
You could try that

dont rent a carpet cleaner... they just make things worse by flooding your carpet and making your stains spread out in the pad and re-surface within just a couple hours and up to two weeks.. once that starts happening it is almost impossible to stop without a carpet and pad replacement.
I have been a professional carpet cleaner for 2 years now and i would recommend calling Stanley Steemer (1-800-steemer) and when you get to speak to your local branch make sure to tell them the spot and ask (if they dont mention it) if they use the red-wine remover that they recently started issuing to all the branches.
either way there is no guarantee that it will ever come out and it probably wont. If you do call steemer, make sure they follow the directions on the wine remover bottle. thanks. also request they make extra dry-strokes to minimise the chance of the stain wicking back. and once they leave set up a fan near the area to dry it as fast as possible. stains usually onlr re-wick while wet.

properly a minimum of you have controlled to do away with the stain. in basic terms for destiny refence nonetheless you're extra useful off attempting to soak up the spill into dry towels extremely wetting your carpet. by utilising wetting the carpet youcontinual the stain deeper into the pile. i might permit your carpet dry and then use Vanish. that is surprising stuff. The scent will disappear in time.

I thnk you don't have to worry about the smell - it will disappear by itself.
Carpet cleaners don't work for me - I just wasted my money and effort after renting one before.
But If the carpet had dried already - you can still try using fan tas tik on it and rubbing it - it is color safe but of course I don't know about your carpet - maybe you can try it in the carpet inside the closet first. But for sure, you have to spray that thing that carpet clearners spray, its like to make it smoother.

Calm down... -It sounds like you did everything you COULD to get the Worst of that stain out (& DON'T worry about the smell- that's the EASIEST thing to get rid of). The Carpet Cleaner idea- isn't a bad one. I can't guarantee it'll get ALL the stain out...-but if you do it (as SOON as possible), it should help at LEAST alittle. Good luck! :)

Never, never rub and scrub a stain. Dab it. Salt poured onto the stain when its still wet will draw the stain from the fibres in the carpet.

You should never rub a carpet to get a stain out....it will split the fibres. You should blot the stain up with kitchen roll or towels and get as much out as possible then place kitchen roll on top with a heavy weight to absorb any that remains and keep changing the pieces of kitchen roll.

The key is to pour white wine over the red stain, though you need to do this pretty quickly.
