I live in the region and know how the local media operates. Here some background to consider.
"Reporter" Jenni Carlson works for The Oklahoman newspaper. The Oklahoman is owned and published by the Gaylord family. Oklahoma University's stadium is named "Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium." Oklahoma University's in-state rival is... Oklahoma STATE University. Mike Gundy coaches for Oklahoma STATE University.
The Gaylords are powerful and also control a TV station and one or two sports talk stations locally. (Hmmm, care to venture a guess who they are rooting for in this goofy little conflict?) A quick glance to see the negative tone of ALL the articles on page 1 of their website, www.newsok.com, might provide a clue.
Gundy's blow up came after years of constant, negative, biased reporting against OSU. There is not a sports fan in the state who doesn't understand the local media / Gaylord connections. Above that, even fans of rival schools think of Jenni Carlson as a complete and utter twit. EVERY time an office discussion turns toward an inept, ignorant, hatchet job article, the first guess is "Jenni." Her writing style is much better suited for the red carpet at the Emmy's. She literally does for college sports what Joan Rivers does for college sports.
In no way could I be considered a sports fanatic. I'm not originally from here so I don't care about the OU and OSU rivalry. But no matter what comes out of Jenni's mouth, it's always idiotic. And the clueless, obnoxious, catty, sniping, petty article she wrote is simply one in string of garbage that reinforces my opinion that she is an idiot working for a newspaper that voted by the Columbia Journalism Review in 1999 as "THE WORST NEWSPAPER IN AMERICA."

All i will say is that any journalist that has ever strapped on a set of pads and banged heads at prep, college, or professional point does no longer have written this text. They be responsive to that's rubbish and in case you hear to what various the extra purpose newshounds/b-casters are saying that have performed the pastime... Gundy grow to be out of bounds with transport, yet on-factor with message. The journalism assn's are ultimate ranks and are being way hypocritical approximately this saying the project could have been dealt with in a "private" way instead of a public attack on the author. per hazard so if for no person elses sake yet Gundy and Reid, yet Carlson could have performed the comparable with what's clearly an editorial with few info and many gossip. Freedom of speech swings the two techniques... it only so happens Gundy punched back this time.

I love what Coach Gundy did. How can this fat female reporter criticize a college football athelete? Questioning his toughness? Please. I bet she can't even hackey sac.
This is precisely the reason that sports programs hire former athletes and coaches to be TV analysts. For credibility and insight. They know what it's like to be on the field. Journalists who have never played a sport have been criticizing athletes for a long time, it's good to see someone call them out on their ignorance.
So the QB is close with his mother -- SO WHAT?! It's sad that she berates this kid and gets PAID for it. The QB doesn't even get paid!
Go Coach Gundy!

I am okay with him defending a player, but he went about it all wrong, and lost credibility in doing so.
One of Gundy's big complaints was negative treatment of a "kid" who is not being paid to play the game. But coaches never object to the tens of thousands of fans fawning over that kid, the tutors arranged to help him maintain minimum eligibility standards, the training table meals he eats, the tricked-up locker room he changes in -- or the positive press most players receive most of the time. Hero worship is expected and encouraged; criticism is child abuse. It's quite the double standard.
(For the record, Reid is 21 years old. He was old enough to vote in the 2004 presidential election or to die in Iraq. But few people are afforded the means to grow up more slowly than major-college athletes.)

I am for him. He came to the rescue of one of his players that was being unjustly raked over the coals by an idiot of a reporter the was writing more of a gossip column than a sports opinion. Cudos to Gundy.

I side with him the reporter slammed a Amateur Student Athlete.
I mean he is an amateur not a professional if he was getting paid to play bash him all you want but not an amateur
What the reporter did was very unprofessional in my opinion.

He's a man...He's 40...he's an idiot!
That 'kid' is an adult and should be able to accept the responsibility he chose when becoming a college athlete.
