Cumaen Sibyl was a famous prophetess. She was given the power of prophesy and a thousand year life by Apollo. She forgot to ask for eternal youth and ended a hag living in a cave. She was 700 years old when she helped Aeneas.

In antiquity, the oracular seeresses of the Ancient Near East and the Mediterranean were referred to by the Greek term "sibyls". In modern times, when "Sibyl" is adopted for a woman's name, the conventional spelling is "Sybil".
