My car has a leather steering wheel and also gear stick, the problem is that with use the laquer coating is wearing off. Has anyone got any ideas??? mine is to restain the worn area with black shoe leather stain and then reseal it ?but with what??
What do the car manufacturers use??
I`ve thought of shoe polish but I cant imagine that it would last very long.

Actually, because I am a cheapskate, I used black shoe polish and it worked. Make sure you scrape all the gunk off the surface first (you will be surprised at what comes off it) using a plastic scraper and make sure you remove any excess polish before buffing the wheel with a soft brush or cloth. When the polish is completely dry, buff it again and you should have no problems. The key is to remove the build up of grime before applying the polish, otherwise you will get black hands.

I wish you would have included the year, make and model of your car. Genuine leather covered steering wheels have no lacquer coating on the outside. It think you have a original equipment fake laminated plastic look-alike. If you want a real leather wrapped steering wheel go on line to: Wheel Skins. They sell smooth or perforated genuine dear-skin leather replacement steering wheel covers that come with a large needle and a tough spool of nylon thread.
I just finished lacing my steering wheel with a a Wheel Skin Kit because I couldn't stand the forever sticky feeling on my fingers and hands.
I'm a reserved questionable old man but have lots of experience re-lacing fast -pitch softball gloves for kids in our area. It job was easy and turned out looking fantastic. They have solid and multi-colored combinations. If you chose to do this the instructions say to tighten the laces as you stitch it on around the steering wheel. For that job I used a cotter key pulling tool to keep the threads tight as i stitched.
I chose a single porforated leather color that matched the center of the steering wheel.

Shoe polish will just wear off on your hands and clothes. All you can do is replace the steering wheel unfortunately.
Anything you use will come right off, especially with the heat.

Go to Halfords and buy a new leather steering-wheel cover..then you just lace it on

take it to a cobblers they will make it look like new thats what i did with mine they only charged me a few quid they cleaned it re stained it an sealed it
