is it true that when a firecracker espldes, mass is lost?

A very *very* tiny amount of mass would be converted to energy.

Much more would be converted to gas. If you put the solid pieces back together, mass would be lost because of the burned (exploded) gunpowder.

Combustion is a purely chemical, not nuclear, process. The energy comes from the formation of chemical bonds, primarily between carbon and oxygen. If you could capture all of the parts, the total mass would be identical to that of the original firecracker.
