Displacement: the amount of liquid moved by an object in that fluid

A 20 ton ship will have to displace 20 tons of water to float, the point at which 20 tons is displaced is where the ship will float at.

A rock cannot displace it's weight in water because it is more dense.

Less dense items float, more dense items sink. (it's like oil and vinagear.

even a huge ship with all it's steel is lighter than the weight of the water it displaces, so it will float, as long as water can't rush in to the void in the hull of the ship. Water is extremely dense - just think about how much a single gallon of water weighs...... If you properly shaped a small piece of iron like a boat, it will float too.
