Start treating it like the border between sovereign nations.

Once upon a time, the US Military spearheaded our frontier. As the frontier moved, so did the Military, leaving behind communities which had sprung up around their outposts. This is why so many cities in the midwest being with the word "Fort".

I'm sorry, except for some congressman's pork, I just don't see the military necessity of continuing to garrison places like Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. All of these bases on the interior should be closed and the units relocated to our southern border, where they are needed. Post notices along the border in spanish that live fire exercises may be performed at any time, and that trespassers do so at their own risk.

well, first of all, I think everyone has to accept that there is no perfect solution for all the problems the US has to deal with. No matter what you do, people get upset. If I were president, I might only let a limited number of people enter the country. Only those in the gravest situations. I would let enough enter to do some of the lower-class jobs that most Americans refuse to do (Hey, it's gotta get done. I mean, think about it, no one wants to give up there job to go pick fruits and vegetables, but without them, no one of could survive.) but not too many that the majority of them are left without a job. I might also require them to speak at least a bit of English, or have a little cash on hand. Something so that they wouldn't die. I would most likely also try my best to pressure Mexico into providing Mexicans with better conditions so that they wouldn't have to go to the trouble of coming to the US illegally. What I wouldn't do is send all the illegals back, because just think about it. If we did that, there would be no one to pick our crops and pick cotton, and all the other jobs that we would never do. If we sent them all back, America would suffer economically, though our literacy rates might slightly improve.

If we really want Mexicans out, we have the capability of keeping them out, but it would mean that some among us would have to do the jobs they do, as well as they do, for the same amount of money. I think that realistically, most Americans don't want to do the construction jobs and the agricultural jobs that illegals typically do for the money that they are paid. I think that most Americans think that the cost of housing and food is high all ready, and if American labor was hired to do those jobs, these costs would easily double. I think we are spoiled by the cheap labor provided by immigrants, and we don't want to lose it, but when faced with the ancillary costs associated with cheap labor, (health care for the indigent, educating their children) we cry foul. We cannot have it both ways. I think that we need to realize that most people who claim American nationality had ancestors who came here from someplace else, and most of those people worked cheap, and took jobs no one else wanted so that we, their children, could have better lives. This process is what made our country vibrant, where the countries in the "Old World" stagnated. It gave us a can-do attitude that allowed for many possibilities. It is a very big part of what made this country great.

Unfortunately, the US can't do it alone. The people of Mexico must change there own country such that it is more appealing for them to live there than to come to the US.

Unfortunately, since that is not likely to happen in the near future, erecting a physical barrier is a very real first step.

Secondly, real and meaningful immigration reform is necessary to provide an achievable path to citizenship for those who seek it. However, this does not mean that we can simply ignore and/or give amnesty to those who have been in violation of our immigration laws for years/decades. There are penalties involved in breaking the law, no matter how long you have been doing it.

Turn Mexico into part of the United States. That way they will have to pay taxes and also have the opportunity to serve in the military as well. Putting up borders is not going to stop them. It is like trying to dam up the ocean. They eventually will break through.

A brilliant idea just struck: Take the same approach as China, but go one step further, Build a great wall spanning the entire U.S. thats including the ocean borders. We would be completely safe!! Hmm maybe thats a little extreme.....

For starters, I would stop rewarding and making promises to those who make it over the border. I would pass a law that it is illegal to cross the border so there would be no more talk of being simply undocumented. I would send a clear message that if caught they will meet with strict adherence to the laws. And I would do everything in my power to get those laws enforced and make it harder for them to get across.

With a fence and enforcement. Not hard. Or maybe we could give the mexican generals a bunch of money and everyone we catch that got across we could take some money back from them. They would enforce the border for us, granted a bunch of dead illegals might stink up my south Texas ranch but hey I can live with that for a few years.

American start building a wall...but not complete it. Then we start moving to mexico...taking everything with us (job, money, and such). Soon they will mess up this country as well. Then when they follow us back down...we hurry back across the border the close the hole.

Simple we invade Mexico take the country and all those jobs we lost to cheap labor and the we can leave all the Mexicans there and stop trying to sneak them in to work the fields.
