You will not like this answer but NO IM, Email, or IRC is safe for kids. I just started letting my 13 year old use MSN , ICQ, and AIM. She can only go online if she logs everything and her mother and I randomly review her chat.
Just too much evil in the world to leave kids by themselves.

Do you consider the Telephone "safe" for children to use when you're not around? If you can't trust your kids with THAT- then don't let them Instant Message. Children need to be taught to communicate RESPONSIBLY before they can use the phone OR the computer. It you just allow them to use it "any old way"- then that's EXACTLY how they're going to use it. ...

no there are predators out there supervise the younger kids internet activities also check your browers history file you may be surprised what you my find also put a parental lock on the computer and pass word protect the pc be sure to log off. from one parent to another

yes it is if you know every one of there contacts in there list and know what they are doing online but if my kid want yahoo aim or msn and i knew the friends they are talking to then yes i would let them. but i would keep password so i can go see who they are talking to in like a month
