Oh, I just read Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, and it was amazing, if you haven't read it yet. It really made me think, and I loved it, and it seems like it would be right up your alley.
Also, try the Diary of Anne Frank, that's as real as you can get. It's also a really good read.
If you are a little more advanced, try reading something by Charles Dickens, and if you like romance, which I don't think you might, try reading something by the Brontë sisters.

To Kill a Mockingbird covers a great deal that provides a lot for a young man to think about. It may not be a true story but it has a lot to teach about life.
