Okay Ashley,
The easier way to look at this is 2 times 1/3. It's the same thing. If you multiply two numbers together it doesn't make a difference which order you do it in.
Okay so we want 2 times 1/3. That means we want two of these things 1/3. But with fractions with 1 in the numerator, if I want two of them I multiply the 1 by 2. So here I get 2/3.
So 2/3 is the answer.
If I want to multiply 3 times 1/5, that is I want 3 of these things 1/5. I multiply the 1 by 3 and get 3/5.
Okay let's make it a little harder. What if we want 3 times 2/7?
You want 3 of these 2/7. This time you multiply the 2 by 3 and get 6/7. Got it?
If you look at your problem the other way 1/3 multiplied by 2, you still do the same thing: multiply the 1 and 2 and get 2/3.
One last thing. Your problem is often stated as "1/3 of 2." Don't get upset with it, just realize when they say something like a fraction of a number it always means multiplication.

Let's write one third as 1/3.
1/3 x 2 = 2/3
Remember multiplying by 2 is like adding it to itself.
So
1/3 x 2 = 1/3 + 1/3 = (1+1)/3 = 2/3
In general a fraction times a number is the top number of the fraction (numerator) times the number.
So
A/B x C = (A x C)/B
With two fractions, multiply the numerators together and the two bottom numbers (denominators) together.
So
A/B x C/D = (A x C)/(B x C)

think about it like this. to multiply two frations, you simply multiply the first numerator (top number) by the secong top number.
then multipy the bottom numbers of the seperate fractions together
this will give you a new fraction.
see if you can simplify it
with that known, make 2 a fraction.
to make a whole number a fraction, simply put it over one.
so now you have 1/3 x 2/1
1 times 2 is 2
3 times 1 is 3
your new fraction is 2/3
that is the answer
another way to look at it is if you have 1/3 2 times... its 1/3 plus 1/3
hope that helped and didnt confuse you

Multiplication is just a shorter (much shorter) way of doing addition
2*(1/3) = 1/3 +1/3 = (2+2)/6 = 4/6 = 2/3
If you cut a pie into 3 pieces, each piece would be 1/3 of the entire pie. If you take 2 pieces then all that remains is one 1/3 piece. In the enitre pie there are 3/3 pieces. If there is one 1/3 piece left then you have the 2/3 of the pie in your hand (or eaten).

You would turn 2 into a fraction 2/1 (Two over one)
Then you set the problem up again, lining up your numbers
1 x 2
- X -
3 x 1
1x2=2
3x1=3
Giving you 2/3 (Two-thirds)

put 2 over 1 and multilpy the top times the top and the bottom times the bottom.
1/3 x 2/1 = 2/3
to be technical; multiply the numerators, then multiply the denominators

well aren't we looking gorgeous :)
this is a better way to write it
(1/3)*2=2/3
you have 2 one-thirds so that will be two-thirds
Basically, it's numerator times numerator and denominator times denominator: (1/3)*(2/1)=2/3
It's easy
