It probably won't improve -- the violence is Iraq is going to continue for quite some time whether we are there or not.

The only difference is that US lives won't be being lost in the cross-fire of somebody else's civil war.

I think that our onlw help can be in the area of providing an AIR FORCE for whatever government Iraq has.

POLICE work is for iraqis, as foreign faces are never a good thing to have patrolling your streets.

The situation will improve once we provide firearms to all households so that kidnappings and terrorism stops. Once that has stopped, common police patrols by iraqi cops will work fine.

Right now unarmed cities where guns have been banned, are safe havens for terrorists because not even the concerned iraqi can fight back.

And having rent-a-soldiers dresses like terrorists do not help either.

Once that stability is there that people know who is the bad guy and who is not we will see things get normal again.

Honestly it wont. If I was in another country and we had problem I still wouldnt want an outside country trying to solve my problems. Its kinda like you talking about your big brother how he aint this and he treats you so mean and you cant stand him but the moment someone on the outside of your family begins to talk about your brother the same way you automatically become defensive and take up for him even though you said the same thing. Thats why we cant fix Iraq. Iraq has to fix themselves and we can only try to protect ourselves from them.

It won't. When we, the U.S., won our independence from England it took about 12 years for us to stabilize our government. We were not embroiled in civil war, like Iraq is now, but we still had to stand on our own as a nation, much like a child becoming a young adult and moving out of their parents' home. We've been training the Iraqi military for what, four years now. Iraq has an elected government. If they want to keep it, it's their responsibility to fight for it. If they want something different, it's their responsibility to change it. Either way, it's their fight now, we've done all we can for them, and they must stand on their own without our troops present.

Democracy will take hold serving to transform the Middle East! That is the vision! We've been around for over 200 years and we still can't agree on anything in the U.S. Why does everyone expect the Iraqi's to be able to establish a "pop-up" democracy? These things take time and determination which is why Patreus wants to give the people a chance. Apparently many in the U.S. think that we are the only one's smart and deserving enough to live in a free society. Very elitest attitude in my estimation.

It will help give the people and the government time to adjust to a free society, this is integral if we want democracy to be able to get a foot hold in the middle east. It is also important that we have a location to attack radical Islam and where better than from Afghanistan and Iraq.

it won't. however, with permanent bases built, it's unlikely the US will leave in the next 20 years, although they'll get their troops off the streets. US has bases in about 130 countries of the world...

Good thinking. We cannot carpet bomb the place if our troops are still there. Time to pull out and send in the B-52s.

Better to fight there then here. And if we can stop or disrupt potential terrorist plans... this would be good.
