A lion eats a zebra within 1 hour
A jaguar eats a zebra within 2 hours
A hyena eats a zebra within 6 hours

How long would it take if all three predators nicely ate the same zebra all at once?

I know this sounds stupid, but it's actually part of my math homework and I can't figure it out! Drives me crazy!

Please help me!

Lions consume zebras at the rate of 1 zebra/hour
Jaguars consume zebras at the rate of 1/2 zebras/hour
Hyenas consume zebras at the rate of 1/6 zebra/hour

If all three eat the same zebra at once, they will consume it at the rate of (1+1/2+1/6) zebras/hour, which is 5/3 zebras/hour. Therefore, to consume 1 zebra, it will take them 1/(5/3) = 3/5 of an hour, or 36 minutes.

Lion = 1 zebra in 1 hour or 6 zebras in 6 hours
Jaguar = 1 zebra in 2 hours or 3 zebras in 6 hours
Hyena = 1 zebra in 6 hours or 1 zebra in 6 hours

That means the three of them could eat a total of 10 zebras in 6 hours.
6 hours = 360 minutes divided by 10 zebras = 36 minutes per zebra.

These rate problems drive me crazy too lol. I think it use to take me 20 minutes to think it out.

Let rate lion is eating at = z / hr

Rate jaguar eats a zebra = z / 2hr

Rate hyena eats a zebra = z / 6hr

6z / 6hr + 3z / 6hr + z / 6hr = 10z / hr

10z / 6hr * t = z

t = 6hr / 10

0.6hr = time

36 min = time
