The Spanish Armada was a fleet of ships (not something two countries "went to war in"), sent to destroy the British Fleet, so that Spain could control the avenues of commerce. I am sure there were other reasons for the state of war between those two nations, but you need to research some history sites to learn more for yourself.

The Spanish sent the Armada to invade England. Elizabeth I who was then Queen was seen as an heretic by the Catholic Spanish, having regard to her Protestantism. Also England was seen as a small, upstart, country by the mighty Spain and one that needed bringing to heel.
