I said from the beginning this would happen. You can't smear the troops and expect the majority of this country to stand behind you!

Captaincollector,
You just keep telling yourself that. You know as well as I do that your left-wing kook fringe is far outside the mainstream of this nation. With that ad, moveon.org and dems have lost a LOT of moderate support. It's the MODERATES who decide most elections.

Hippie,
How did he sell out again? Oh... That's right. He dared to state that there's progress being made in Iraq. Nevermind he had no motivation for lying.

Oh... Right... They said our troops murdered civilians in cold blood... No... wait... That was John Murtha.
Oh! That's right... They said our troops are terrorizing women and children in the dead of night... No... Wait... That was John Kerry.
Ooh! They said that our troops have failed and called their commander on the ground a liar and a propagandist... No... Wait... That was Hillary Clinton.
Need I go on?

Mtmeddigo,
Those aren't military folks. They're politicians. Their former military service does not immunize them from criticism for their current actions, especially since they're stabbing those they should consider close comrades in the back.

Earnest,
It doesn't matter whether they lost dem support or not. I've talked to a lot of guys who consider themselves moderates... They're looking forward to having a Rep. president again this next term.

Folks, I KNOW their support increased among the left-wing kook fringe. They lost support, however, from the MODERATES, the REASONBLE people.

How did it backfire on the Democrats? Nobody who was voting Democratic has changed their mind because of it. People who are still deciding their vote are intelligent enough to know that MoveOn.Org is a far left wing group that has no official ties to the Democratic Party. It's no different than when the Family Research Council makes some ridiculous statement about gays or liberals using abortion as birth control. Those who support the Republican Party pat them on the head and make no changes in their support. This isn't any different. When the far right wing claims that taking Petraeus to task means they were disrespecting the troops, anyone with working brain cells knows that is not true and that it's just another talking point smear tactic from the far right. Bush chose to have a general defend his war policy in front of Congress. That left the general up for examination. Bush should have known better, but obviously he doesn't. What a surprise. Keep believing this made a difference to the support of Democrats. I guess you guys have to land on every single thing you can to buttress up support, you've got a long row to hoe when it comes to election in '08.
EDIT: Bullroar, what moderates? Where is your proof of this? I'm a moderate Independent. I know enough to know that MoveOn and the Democrats are not one and the same. I didn't like the ad, but I liked Rudy's response ad even less. The moderates I know, and I know plenty of them being very active politically in my area, weren't affected at all by this. They tend to care about the details of who did what instead of lumping everyone together like the partisan people do. You are dreaming, every last one of you who think this means reduced support for the Democrats, are dreaming.

I am really not sure it has backfired yet, so don't be so confident. I hope it does so don't get me wrong. I hope that by next year at this time the democrats will see that their allegiance to Moveon.org, the far left that took over the party in the 70's and their move to hate America at every stand and begin to build a new party again that will give us two parties again that believe in the US and its special under God relationship with its citizens. That way we can truly get consensus on issues like immigration and social security.

Me. Extremely glad.
Even the ultra liberal NY Times is doing the proverbial pee-pee dance over questions about the ad, it's alleged discounted price and the violation of its own policies concerning political advertising.
I find it very disturbing that a website as venomous as Moveon.Org has any support what so ever. This ad was disgusting - it did nothing for me but highlight Moveon's obvious hatred of America and the military. I doubt even Michael Moore could have improved upon its deception and general anti-American theme.

Not only has it backfired on them, the New York Times has committed a crime!
They sold a full page political ad at a special discount price because they are fellow travelers, and then the NYT denied it for two weeks! Finally, under pressure the Times admitted that they violated their own rules, so they are guilty of being in violation of campaign finance laws.

Moveon.org got 15,000 new members and a half million in donations after the ad was run. Some of the republicans who said they were going to vote for Webb's bill decided not to because of the ad, but if they put this ad ahead of giving the troops more time at home between periods of active duty then I would have to say they don't support the troops either. These people need to get off their high horse and get something done about what is going on in Iraq and forget the politics.
Five recent independent studies on the progress in Iraq were in conflict with what the general said. One was by the GAO.

Yes, I have been hearing and seeing evidence of it, too.
MoveOn is repaying the $100K difference in the price they should have paid. The NY Times reputation (such as it is) has been severely hurt. The injustice of accusing Petreaus BEFORE he spoke has created a groundswell of sympathy for him...and indirectly for his message.
The American people are inherently a fair-minded group. They take up for the underdog and saw how unfairly Petreaus was treated. It made the Dems and especially MoveOn appear very petty and partisan.
