I traveled the US for 2 1/2 years with my family. You can't drive the whole route, but you can drive parts of it. Some parts are boring , but others are really cool. There's a lot of history. Have a great day!!!

You can still follow most of the Route 66 path, though much has been replaced by interstates. As has been noted before it has been replaced by 55 and 70 in the Midwest, though you can often get off the interstate and drive the business routes and follow the original path. In the western states it follows I 40. There are large sections in the western states where the original path has grown over as the interstate has taken over the traffic use. Many of the old stops for route 66 still remain on the I-40 across Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

I saw a documentary about 10 years ago where they attempted to drive following only the original road, and were unable to make the entire trip without getting on other roads.

Yes it's still open. It's not the same as it used to be, and some sections are closed or completely redesigned, but it's very interesting to drive through. Although it was decomissioned in 1985, portions are a National Scenic Byway or a Historic Route. Many preservation groups have also tried to save and even tried to landmark the old motels and neon signs along the road in different states. I drove on Rt 66 for several hours on my way from the Grand Canyon to Vegas last year. Even that small portion was pretty interesting. I hope to drive the entire length one day.

I have only been on Rt 66 from Holbrook Az to Bylthe CA... for the most part it is driveable... you do have to get on the interstate sometimes... and it's very boring.. I acually live off of Rt 66 in a little golf community in Kingman AZ, well it's about 15 miles from Kingman and the Rt 66 going from my house to Kingman is very boring...
