Most drive throughs I've seen have signs that state that walk up business is not served at the drive through window. There may not be a law against approaching the window in or pushing a cart, but McDonalds can refuse to serve you there and if you refuse to leave, you could be cited for trespassing.

I'd doubt theres any law spelling out fast food drive through regulations. BUT you can get cited under a traffic violation (crime) for creating hazardous road conditions!!!
Like the others here have stated McDonalds is under no duty to serve you either inside the restaurant or outside. If they wouldn't serve you in the drive thru in your cart it's probably because they don't want a repeat of such behavior which could create a liability for negligence on their part if anyone, like you, is injured while in a cart. People are suing restaurants every day so the mgmt is not trying to help you dig in its pockets!
Get a dang car!

That is up to the individual states. The reason being is liability issues if one gets hurt. Some states have laws to protect the establishment against law suits because an idiot decided to use a drive thru while not in a motorized vechicle.

A cart? As in a shopping cart? Or a go-kart? Anyway, I don't know if it's illegal, but I know you're only supposed to go through the drive-thru in a car.

it is not againts the law, although some cities have strange ordinances. But as far as Mcdonald's drive thrus it is fine.
