How can I make it stick to my brain. I need to know for tests.

Except for glycine, all of the others are alanine or derivatives of it. So memorize the molecular groupings attached to alanine in the others. The three-letter abbreviations are pretty obvious. The one-letter abbreviations are a pain, and I have never learned them. If you must, I can only suggest brute memorization. As far as properties are concerned, they come from the structures. Aspartic and glutamic acids are acidic; lysine and histidine are basic; and leucine and valine are neutral.
