Americans gave up free speech when they became ''politically correct." There was a time in this country's history when people did not have to be told about proper speech and things like cursing because good manners were taught in the home. Unfortunately good ideas are being lost in what one should or should not say.

Well, a newspaper can not drop the f-bomb. There are certain fcc regulations that try to keep stuff like that from happening. Obscenity and all that. I will admit though that the p.c. factions do have a little more influence than they should. Sure you will have people sneering at you for saying you support the war on terror, but when you say that you are against everything American, you burn flags and buy dixie Chix CD's, hollyRood thinks your great.

By the way, I am from Texas and I am Ashamed that the little fat "chick" is from my home state.

Go America! Go W!

Exactly- that's something I realized a long time ago, but not many other people have!

Our freedom of speech is cut off!

In school, we're told not to swear- why not??? Speech is just vibrations in the air, why shouldn't we make the sounds we want to?

We can't say what we want to say, for fear of being considered racist, or prejudiced, or insensitive.

A recently heard of two guys having a private conversation, one of them swore, a policeman overheard them, and they got, I think, a £50 fine...

The world is becoming a closed box- You MUST go to school, you MUST go to college, you MUST get a job, you MUST have a government-approved house to be able to live in it, or raise kids...

You can't even have a book that tells you how a bomb is made! that's considered terrorism!

It's time the governments realised we want to live our lives our own way. Britain, in particular, is becoming a big-brother state.

There is a fine line between some speech and slander.
What is music to someones ears, may be noise to another.
How then shall we decide who is to be burdened with unwanted things other than separation or Compromise!
Play your damned Boom boxes `til 10:00 pm, then shut the hell up! Have a little respect for the OTHER guy.

Hate speech is not a crime.

Saying something with the intent to cause someone to immediately commit violence is a crime -- because it is considered more in the nature of solicitation or accomplice liability for the resulting crime -- which is why it is not protected speech.

So, you can say "I hate #####" all you want -- but you cannot order or request someone to go out and attack all #### -- that's the difference.

You're right. Unfortunately, free speech anymore, is just a supporting crutch that gives a license for inappropriate misbehavior.

i recently did an essay on censorship. The only form of media that the government does not censor is the internet. For that sole purpose i included the words b**** and n***** in my essay. My teacher gave me an A- and not because of that.
So yes, freedom of speech has been muffled, but atleast we have the internet as our safety net!
