I have a great business idea, but I want to know if I should get a business degree first (or just some courses), or if it's a waste of my time. Also I could get the degree, then work for some time building capital so I don't have to borrow too much money. On the other hand, I feel like I may be wasting time taking theoretical business classes and spending money in college...

No one can answer this better than you. You will run into a lot of issues where an advance business degree will be useful running your own show.

you have a couple of alternatives:
1. to find out if your business idea might fly - check out your state's Small Business Development or Association resources. The main purpose of these folks is to help other people get into business for themselves. Rotary Clubs are full of people who have done this - so they may be a resouce, too.

2. if you can't find the SBA in your area, go to the business dept. of the university where you are considering attending. As for an advisor with some practical business experience. Ask that person.

3. then ask your new business friend at the university for some career counseling. they aren't just interested in recruiting students - and will give you some practical advise.

It might be your idea is the greatest thing since sliced bread. It may be that it is not. Finding someone with business experience who will help you find out the truth between these two extremes will help you find your way in business.

good luck

Not to be a naysayer, but what if your great business idea doesn't pan out? At least when you are finished with college. you will have a degree that you can fall back on. I don't think college is for everyone, but I do believe it gives you more choices in life! Plus, who knows whom you might meet in college that can help you with your idea or has connections that you can use throughout your life. Regardless, good luck!
