Does anyone know the name of the component on the motherboard near the CPU Socket, there's usually a few of them, they may be black or green or some other color, and they look like a ring wrapped in copper wire.

Those are inductors that are part of the processor voltage regulator circuit. If you see three of those, they are part of a 3-phase regulator circuit. Newer motherboards have 4 or more phases. High-end ASUS enthusiast boards usually have an 8-phase regulator.
