Do you think it would be safe to driver or will the rest of the gears go bad as well?

It depends on year, make and model. I know lots of vehicles, especially early GM vehicles where the overdrive lockup would go bad, and you would simply disconnect the lockup actuator and those transmissions lasted forever with just using the 3 speeds without overdrive.

Eventually, you are going to lose the rest of the gears too. A new transmission is going to run you at least a grand and thats if you get a rebuilt one and find someone to do the labor cheap. I would pass on it.
