Since all the copper was used up, the molar mass of the resulting copper chloride is more than twice that of copper. Since the molar mass of CuCl is less than twice the molar mass of CU, it is CuCl2.

5.22gCu-chloride - 2.46gCu = 2.76g Chlorine

Atomic weights: Cu=63.5 Cl=35.5

2.46gCu/63.5 = 0.0387

2.76gCl/35.5 = 0.0777

0.0387/0.0387 = 1.000

0.0777/0.0387 = 2.009

So the empirical formula is CuCl2
