It's both, as Wikipedia calls it an "American Horror Comedy" but these have come to be known as Dark Comedy's. Like Danny Darko. A movie often has more than one element, like The Shining had Horror and a Mystery to it as well (though it's categorized as Horror). The best example I can give is on television. We've seen an outburst recently of Drama's with comedy in it, they've started to be called "Dramedy's" an example is Rescue Me (first thing I thought of). It a drama with bits of comedy intertwined. But I think Gremlin's 1 is considered to fit in both categories, as either a Comedic Horror film, Horror Comedy or Dark Comedy (Dark referring to the Horror side). It doesn't really push towards either Comedy or Horror since he has aspects of both. Since it scares you, it might not scare someone else, that's why I think it's both. An even amount of both elements.

Gremlins was a comedy fantasy-horror. It's a shame they've never re-mastered it because the sound and picture quality now are very poor - it looked a lot better originally.
Gremlins 2 was an unspeakable pile of rancid garbage; they could have made a decent movie but instead they did a "zany" spoof of the original. It was almost as bad as Highlander 2.

The gremlins movies where a little about both. They where suppose to be in between comedy and horror. That is why i have the first movie. I think i like the second one myself the best. The first one was introducing the gremlins. The second one was suppose to teach them what they didn't know in the first one - not to repeat what happen. But you know they never learned what they where suppose to learn from the first one.

i love gremlins. I watched the films when i was five and never got tired of them. But i think the first one was meant to be a horror, but maybe they thought the second one would make more money if they made it less scary and funnier

Man, I don't know! I know after seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark, CE, Poltergeist and ET, I was disappointed with Gremlins, when I finally did see it. Yeah, gremlins 2 was funnier. I like my real sci-fi to try to be a lot more credible, though.

I think when the film was released it was supossed to be a bit scary, but with a bit of humour added. i think the genre is quite sci - fi now though
The gremlins movies are ace classics though!

I liked The Gremlins 1 better...sure it was scary but I still loved it. Gizmo was so cute....who knew something that cute can make something so scary.

They're not horror films - I remember going to see them when they were first released and I'm pretty sure they were a 12. But definitely comedy anyway, just a bit on the creepy side for really young kids.

Well i think the 1st film was excellent as you don't know what to expect or what its about..any films made after that seem more comfortable to watch due to knowing the story more wisely...Same with most films really like Jaws,Ghost busters and a nightmare on elm street etc..
