I mean, could we somehow put wings on somebody's back through bone extensions? If not, why not?

I think that it is entirely probable that wings can be created on a human being. Gene manipulations will one day be as accurate as a computer program and the organism will then be a creative expression of a gene modder or an RNA artist.

Wings take the arm positions on birds and mammals, and it would be possible,.
The wingspan would be enormous however.

I don't think so. Such effort would require additional 30 percent muscle mass. Where would all that muscle fit, in proximity to the wings?
