The Battle of Wounded Knee in South Dakota had nothing to do with the Civil War. It had everything to do with Chief Big Foot of a Lakota band, having received the brunt of rage from elements of the 7th Cavalry after the demise of Custer.

The massacre, as it is accurately named, occurred in the winter of 1890. The tribesmen of Big Foot were bringing him in for medical treatment. Instead, a small company of 7th Cavalrymen massacred the whole lot of men, women, and children. Big Foot lay dead and frozen in time as depicted by a photographer on the scene.

The Sioux were unarmed and defenseless and had no inclination to fight. The cavalry, still incensed over the killing of Custer's troops at the Little Big Horn, decided it was 'pay-back' time.

After the last volley of shots were made, the soldiers dug a huge grave and threw all the slain victims down into it. That was the heroic Battle of Wounded Knee.

The only relation i can think of between the civil war and wounded knee was the 7th Cavalry was once commanded by Custer, who was the youngest general in the civil war (or one of the youngest). But relating the two is stretching it a bit. The events were some 20 years apart. The small hamlet were the massacre occured was near wounded knee creek. The war between the states had nothing to do with the massacre of Big Foot's band....

The battle of Wounded Knee ws so named for a river that was nearby. It was actually a Massacre where the Soldiers went into a Peaceful villiage and killed all the people, men, women, and children. It was after the Civil War and most believe it was the Army's retaliation for the black eye they suffered at Little Big Horn.
