yesterday, Bob turned 18. Today, it is Jan. 1, 2007. His 18th birthday is Dec. 31, 2006. On Dec. 30, 2006 (the day before yesterday), Bob was 17. Next year is 2008. On Dec. 31, 2008, Bob turns 20, 2 years after he turns 18.

Bob's birthday is December 31. Today is January 1. The day before yesterday was the 30th, he had a b-day yesterday to be 18, he will have another at the end of the year that began today to be 19, and his b-day NEXT year will make him 20.

If his birthday was Feb 29 on leap year and is 18 now he would be 19 next feb 29 but wouldn't have a birthday for 4 years.

If in fact he was born on the 29th of Feb then He would only be 5. He has on earth for 18 years, it would take 2 years to turn 20.

His birthday is Dec. 31, and today is Jan. 1.
Example:
The day before yesterday, Dec. 30, 2006, he was still 17.
On Dec. 31, 2006 he turned 18.
Today is January 1, 2007, so this year he will turn 19.
Next year (2008) he will turn 20.

we are talking about 365 days here not "a year"as in 2007 or 2008...so...if he was 17 two days ago then he was 18 yesterday, then a whole 365 days from yesterday he will be 19...there for, as from today in 365 days he will be 20....you see?
