Here are 14 tenants of Fascism.
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the m

I don't consider all of the five conservative voices on the Supreme Court to be fascist.
Roberts and Alito are not fascist -- they just believe in centralized federal power. Kennedy is not fascist -- he's just a moderate conservative.
Scalia is an originalist -- and as much as I disagree with almost everything he says, he's not a fascist.
Thomas I have my doubts -- but that at most 1 of the 9.
And yes, they will continue to trample our rights for decades to come, because they have that authority. And if another conservative Republican is elected in 2008, and appoints one or two more hard-line right-wing conservative Justices, then it will be many more decades before we can start to recover some of the civil liberties we once had.
All that being ranted -- there is a simple solution to the voter ID problem, and one that doesn't run afoul of 24th Amendment requirements -- just make the state-issued ID free, and provide free legal help (there would be plenty of volunteers from law schools) for those people who don't know how to obtain one.

"Fascists"? There are a lot of terms being thrown around that are quite inappropriate. I guess that to some people, following the Constitution is the equivalent of "fascism". But I digress.
Anyway, they are reviewing the Indiana law that requires ID to vote, but that does not take away your right to vote. The Indiana law also includes the following:
"Voters who are unable or decline to produce proof of identification may vote a provisional ballot. The ballot is counted only if (1) the voter returns to the election board by noon on the Monday after the election and: (A) produces proof of identification; or (B) executes an affidavit stating that the voter cannot obtain proof of identification, because the voter: (i) is indigent; or (ii) has a religious objection to being photographed; and (2) the voter has not been challenged or required to vote a provisional ballot for any other reason."
So, even without a state issued ID, they can cast a provisional ballot, which will count if they follow up.
Of course, this begs the questions:
- How do adults operate in the world without any ID?
- Do you want people who can't afford a $5 ID to be voting?
- Why don't all the people concerned with this raise money and pay for these peoples' IDs? They could also volunteer to help them fill out forms and drive them to the state offices. After all, how can one cash a welfare check without an ID?

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
A lot of democratic countries require photo ID to vote. You need photo ID to get across the border, to go on airplanes, to drive, to buy liquor or cigarettes (if you look young) - there are a lot of things you need photo ID for, and I've rarely met a person who has no photo ID whatsoever. Why not have to prove that you're a citizen to vote? Why not have a way to prevent fraudulent voting? And what the heck does asking someone to prove their identity have anything to do with democrats versus republicans or the entrenchment of fascism?
Not one person in that situation is having their right to vote taken away from them. All they need to do is flash their driver's license, or passport, or some other form of ID, and they can vote for whoever they please. Would you sue the government because they didn't check voter ID and someone else ended up voting using your name?

They aren't taking away your right to vote for crying out loud. They are asking for a picture ID, which is something you have to have anymore to even cash a check. I'm sure most elderly people and poor can afford the $9 fee to get a state id. I just got one last week, and that's how much they cost. It's real simple. Don't make it into a big deal.

if you want to ***** about a real travesty from the courts , talk about how they are not releasing the code for the voting machines, so we can check if they have rigged software. the courts agreed that the company gets to keep it secret , to protect their ability for competition, even though they are a government monopoly, and have no competition. that is a travesty and fraud just waiting till voting day and ready and willing to happen.

What does being poor or elderly have to do with showing ID? What is it...$8 to get an ID made? Democrats don't want people to have to show ID becuase that makes voter fraud much easier. You SHOULD have to show ID.
