Your water likely has a high level of sand in it. Since you directly use the items straight from your dishwasher (like your dishes) and look into the machine to clean it, you have noticed the problem. The good news is that your dishwasher is giving you a heads-up on a problem occurring all through your house. A simple sediment filter (about $30 at Home Depot) can easily be placed in line with the water coming in to your house. This should stop any sand from entering your dishwasher or any other appliances! Good luck!

Either you have a well or a cystern. Only way to have sand in the water. You will have to install a cleanable filter in the line where it comes into the house. Not a big job. Bu has to be kept cleaned out.

you have a lot of sand in your water and should consider a filter or softener to get rid of it.
