I was reading this article on USAToday.com and from the KGO website about how the SF Film Commission denied the Marines permission to film in the city for NO good reason at all and would not explain to reporters the reasons for their decision. In the KGO article it also mentions how the city blocked the USS Iowa from docking here, banned the junior ROTC from high schools, and trys to to ban the yearly Blue Angels air show.

Do you think it was wrong of the film commission to deny the Marines permission to film? Also do you think leaders in the city of SF don't like the military for some reason. Do you think the film commission and other leaders have gone to far in other instances in trying to block the military from doing things in the city? I just wanted to get people's opinions from the Bay Area b/c SF gets a lot of negative media attention for it's liberalism and stuff like this is why, even though I know it's not as bad as people not from the area think it is.

I said they didn't give any GOOD reasons. Read the article a little closer, they give only ONE reason, and it was "traffic control". But Capt. Greg Corrales, who commands the SFPD's traffic bureau and deals with crews that shoot in the city said that reason was BS basically. Especially considering all the other events SF allows that cause much more disruption to traffic like protests, demonstrations, critical mass, ect... If there was a good reason to deny them then why won't the SF Film Commision talk to reporters for more info?

As for the Blue Angels, that's the case in every city they fly in. When I used to live a few miles from MCAS Miramar in SD they used to fly low over my house too and set of car alarms, but you don't see other cities trying to ban them like SF.

Absolutely not. I think we all just dislike the idea of the war. Most people that I talk to here realize that many man and women in the military are just doing their job, plain and simple. Why hate the pen? Hate the hand that writes with it

1- The Film Commission had a perfectly good (political) reason for doing what they did. They want to protect themselves.

Like Chicago, San Francisco operates under the strong mayor system of governance. The mayor is not merely "first among equals" like in San Diego. He has extensive executive powers. The commissioners are appointed by the mayor and serve at his pleasure.

If San Francisco landmarks were to appear in military recruitment videos, Newsom would probably get an earful from the voters. And then he'd turn his anger on the Film Commission. Somebody has to fall on their sword for defying the electorate, and it isn't going to be his honor!

2- Who cares what the national media says? No, seriously. Think of it from the perspective of these leaders:

If you're a California Democrat, "negative media attention" from Bill O'Reilly and USA Today means diddily squat. You're not running for president. At worse, the rants and hate-mail are an amusing distraction. And you'll also get to hit the Sunday talk show circuit for free.

The bottom line is this...as long as Los Angeles and the Bay Area are still on your side, it doesn't matter what folks in Kansas think. You'll still have a job at the end of the day.

Actually, they did give reasons, if you'll read the article.

The film commission denies filming permits on a daily basis, and doesn't have to give a reason. People are just wonky about this one because it was the Marines.

And the Blue Angels ban has to do with safety. They've had a few crashes and "incidents" lately. I don't know if you're aware of this, but when they visit, they continually fly low and slow over the city. When they come by my house, the planes are so close I can literally see the pilot's faces. (Well, his eyes and mask, anyway.)

Gavin "twosome" Newsom remains component of the top-Ashburry crowd of stoners! i don't care approximately 'Frisco, or L.A. Boycott l. a.! additionally Boycott 'Frisco too! I say this from adventure! I stay in Southern California. . . Like San Bernardino County. hey RADA! do not overlook a supply up on the Grand Canyon to boot as Williams and Flagstaff section! Very alluring certainly! i could even go there instead of the coastline cities that are in L.A. County! In L.A. Mayor Antonio Veragosa has screw'd issues over so undesirable in L.A. The infrastructure is so screw'd up! Then he is going before the Media and says "l. a. is broke!" i ask your self (paradoxically) why. . . .

The San Fransisco politicians hate the military as well as a large group of liberal military hating strange people. But I think the silent majority is grateful for their freedom that the military ensures them. They say the squeaky wheel gets the grease and it seems to. I say the empty can rattles the most.

KGO is a very conservative, republican station, and there is one person call" mike savage" something like O'reiley in new york always spread hate speech.

I saw this news this morning in USAtoday.com too, but I can't find any other resourse online. SF is hub of anti-war, people are very liberal, it maybe true or maybe false, but I know many people pay their respect in national cemetery in presidio.
