Can anyone give me a logical explanation to why a nationally ranked team can win without a problem (never having lost the lead in the game) can drop a place in the standings? I am completely baffled and stupified by this. Please explain.

Because the ranking system is done by votes by sports writers in the AP, (1st place vote = 25 pts, 2nd place= 24pts and so on). It's completely subjective, that's why a team can drop a place in the standings. Say a 11th ranked team beats a really crappy team, never lost the lead, but didn't blow them out, played sloppy, defense allowed the crap team to stay in the game. This win would not be as impressive if the 12th ranked team beat the 1st ranked in a close game. So naturally one would think the 12th ranked team is better than its ranking and the 11th ranked team about the same, maybe a little worse. So the next poll would show how the voters are feeling about the teams and would likely place the 12th ranked team above the 11th even though they didn't lose.

Two reasons: ( I assume that you are talking about UF) First, Florida almost got beat. They put on a horrible show against Ole Miss, whereas Oklahoma whooped Tulsa (big surprise, I know). Second, people dont like the SEC because we kick BUTT! So what better way to stick it to us than through the ratings.

Here is my theory: When the BCS comes out, LSU may be above USC and people will SCREAM foul!

You didn't say who the team was, but my guess is based on who they played (strength of competition) vs the team that moved up in the poll. Also, there are different polls, so which poll? AP, USA Today, BCS..........?
