Hello,
Yeah youve probably seen my questions about my audition, well if you havent it doesnt matter.
I was supposed to audition for a dance contest, ive been excited all week, but when I got on stage for the audition I got stage fright, and I backed out. I feel like a right dumb ***, and I was really confident before I got on stage. Now im even scared to go to school incase I get picked on for backing out.
Please help me? What do I do...?
I cant enter it again but I regret backing out.

Thanks,
Ciarax xxx

Everyone has done something like that in their life. Stage fright is common.

For me, my attitude with everything has been to defy the world - to prove everyone who stands against me wrong. If you say, stay home from school out of fear of ridicule your only proving those who wish to see you fall right. Walk into school with your head held high and act like nothing happened. If anyone gives you any trouble just keep on walking. There will always be other auditions, just take it one step at a time. So you backed out of this one, walk into the next one hoping to get the first few steps of a routine complete at the next one. Chances are once you manage to get the first couple of steps done you'll be able to finish the routine, becasue you'll get so lost in the music you'll forget who's watching.

Here's a couple of quotes that always helped me:

". . . this thing we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down." ~Mary Pickford

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." ~Ambrose Redmoon

If dancing is something that is important to you, keep at it. Your dreams are more important than whatever anyone else says or thinks about you.

Here's a couple techniques to help with stage fright:

Don't look the audience in the eye, look in their direction, because otherwise they know your afraid, but instead stare directly at the wall behind them or the table they're sitting at.

If possible, have a friend stand in the wings waiting. I'm always nervous being on stage alon, but if I know someone I know is standing nearby, I'm less afraid.

Talk on the phone to a friend or do something that distracts you and consumes you attention before an audition, that way you can't dwell on what could go wrong.

Last, NEVER give up. Everyone gets better at stuff in time.

Next time, break a leg! You'll do great!

EVERYBODY has to spend some time being a dumb @ss.

Aren't you glad you're getting yours all done early?

HIgh School really is a form of temporary insantiy. I could tell you you don't NEED to get all self concious and paranoid - but that's part of the insanity.

You of course WILL be picked on for this. That's because EVERYONE is suppose to spend some time looking silly when they dance. You might as well dance because not dancing doesn't get you out of your 'time looking silly' quota.

Play this on YouTube (Lee Ann Womack I hope you dance)

I think it was Lance Armstrong who said that the pain of "it" lasts only a little while. Quitting lasts forever.

You made your bed. Now you have to sleep in it!

You have to be strong mentally and know that every time you mess up or don't perform up to your or others' standards, that it is an opportunity to get better. If you stick around long enough in this industry, you will get more than your fair share of no's so you better get used to it and the criticism and feedback from your teachers. No one is perfect, so what makes you so special?
