Don't run anything on an extension cord. It is a fire hazard and a violation of the electric code and the fire code. It is also a violation to modify an extension cord. Wire the light correctly or have it done by an electrician. It's not that hard. A dimmer controlling the receptacle outlet where the light plugs in would be pretty easy.

Get a double handy box, a dimmer switch, and a 120v wall receptacle. I would buy a short orange extension cord, cut off the female end and run it into the handy box wire up the switch to the wall receptacle and there you go, a homemade extension cord with a dimmer switch installed. I do not think you can buy a ready made one. I might be wrong.

You could try using in a three way light bulb. I put one in my floor lamp and it gives three different lighting options. It not made for three way, and works anyway. Used to own a lamp with a round knob, so i cold dim it or brighten it. They sell the lamps with dimmer switches. Other than those inexpensive options, a friend of mine, he's a professional electrician, he put in a light he had me help him tie the wires together, i've been shocked before, so it was a big accomplishment for me, and he wired a dimmer switch into the wall. I've been shocked before by trying to turn on a lamp that had no bulb, and instead of looking I felt around and accidently put my finger in the light socket, Wow!!! it was at my birthday party, no one knew but I was drained. Hope this helps and good luck!
