If I was angry at myself and simply cried out "F***!" why does that offend people. Do the sound waves compress the air in just the right fashion to hurt ones ear? Do some of those offended ever wish they weren't offended so they wouldn't have to suffer?

It doesn't offend me. To me it's just a word. Then again I'm not easily offended. Pretty much nothing offends me.

Personally, it doesn't bother me too much, most of the time its just seems amusing or outrageously funny to me . However, if it's said with emotion, specifically, hatred or anger, and especially if it is directed at someone, some people might become concerned for their safety, especially, if the person swearing and / or displaying emotion starts throwing things or something.

I've often wondered about this swearing controversy and taboo too. What's the big deal? I tend to acknowledge alanastarkey's answer. It breaks the undeclared rules of decency. I've also found that a lot of people tend to view people that swear or cuss as less intelligent, prone to being disagreeable or less reasonable, and even on the wrong side of the law, and statistically headed for prison!!!! Personally, as I have said, I could care less. Showing concern sometimes causes some individuals to swear even more. And I must admit that at times, I also find myself swearing, but the F word is one word I rarely, if at all use.

To answer the other questions:
No, LOL, I don't think the sound waves carrying this word physically hurt the ear anymore than any other exclamation.

Yes, as far as wishing they weren't offended by swearing, I'm sure there are some that wish they weren't offended, etc...

p.s. I read the strangest article one time that said that the word "raca" in the Bible (if a man says, "raca" to his brother, he is in danger of hell fire) is the biblical equivalent of today's f word.

strange, huh?

There are very few words in the English language that offend me, that is NOT one of them, I hate that word, it sets my teeth on edge, but offend No..... It is just a nasty, childish word...... I know people most or some people are under the opinion that words are just words, and if you feel that way find and dandy, but in my house that word , among others is a big NO NO....... adult or not, that word is NOT used....... go in peace.... God bless

Since I have 2 brothers and work with truck drivers, I hear it a lot. If it's used once in a while and not EVERY OTHER WORD like my bros do, then it doesn't bother me. But if it's used all the time, then it gets annoying and worn out fast. don't like to hear it generally....but once in a while is ok. But not all the time!

I'd say the emotion behind the word is what is offensive. Anger is a strong emotion. I don't think the word alone is enough to piss someone off and if it is, they are a whiney socialist baby.

There are certain linguistic rules we have agreed upon as a culture.

One is that using the "f" word is forbidden.

So, by using it, you are signaling that you are choosing to break the unwritten rules of society.

It can have many affects, one of them is offence. With a sex partner, it can be a turn-on. With friends it can signal that you consider all present to be part of an "in group"

Foul language represents and not only means something physical but it has spiritual significence whereby one is not whole or pure in their spirit, but rather defiled. Jesus Christ stated that it is not what goes into a man that defiles him but it is what he says and thinks that defiles the man and anyone who is defiled cannot enter into the place where a Holy God rules and reigns. (Heaven) This is why God sent Christ, to cleanse us of our filthy mouth and to make us pure and holy and ready for heaven.

Would you say the word in front of someone you respect, like your mom, or your teacher, or maybe your parson? If you would, then go right ahead and say it when and where you feel.
