Just did it again yesterday - fixed an error of his. Why should I?

Is it necessary that he do your job? Is he constantly in your way? Or is he "being helpful"? It would all depend on the situation I guess. If he's a thorn in your side then I'd leave the mistake and have him suck up to it, just as you would have to, if it was your error.

I'd let him sink to the bottom,
if he learns to swim on his own, fine.
If not,
then send a sympathy card to his widow.
