Hello, I live in the Monterey Peninsula and will have some friends visit in from out of town who would like to see San Francisco. I was hoping to save some money on gas and parking, however the BART website has not been very helpful. Where is the nearest BART station (to me) where I can park my car all day and where would we exit the BART in Union Square? I already know we will have to most likely pay close to $10 to ride wherever we want to go all day. I just need a starting point and I am most familliar to Union Square. Thanks!

Fremont from I 880 mowry exit, you can parking all day free (be sure to arrive there before 8am), and take BART to powell station.

Or Millbrae from 101,you may need to pay $2 parking, but its short ride to SF.

Monterey is nowhere near San Francisco, so you'll have to drive into range of public transportation. And given your location, Caltrain will probably work much better than BART.

Although the Caltrain station in San Francisco is located in Mission Bay (near the baseball park), you can get to Union Square easily enough. Take any N-Judah or T-Third tram heading towards Downtown...and get off at Powell Street station.

-----------------

- Limited Caltrain Service: The Gilroy-San Francisco trains are really designed for commuters. They only operate on weekdays. And even then, you're limited to a few departures and returns. If you want to do it this way, plan on getting up very early in the morning.

To San Francisco: 6:07 AM, 6:30 AM, 7:05 AM
To Gilroy: 3:07 PM, 4:56 PM, 5:27 PM

- Regular Caltrain Service: If you drive further north to Tamien or San Jose, you can catch trains to and from San Francisco all day long. This is what I'd recommend. It gives you far more flexibility than the Gilroy option.

The closest BART station to you is probably the one in Fremont (free parking), I think it is $6 to go to SF, however driving from Fremont to Monterey is still a fairly long drive. I think you should just make the road trip to SF and make life easier imo

Maybe Cal train would be a better fit, there is a station in South San Jose and probably further south where you are

Turns out there is a CalTrain station in Gilroy, that is as far south as it goes

Monterrey?
Probably Millbrae if your are going up 101 or Fremont if you go inland and then north.. try checking the BART site for parking and fees from that point. You can always ask someone in the Information area of the station about the closest station to Union Square. I haven't been to Frisco in eons.. can't stand the city but I think Montgomery might be the closest.. get a map of SF and check to see where that that is. .try google maps.com
