Check what formats your computer supports. It may just be a DVD-Rom which means you can't burn a DVD with it. Even if you can burn a DVD there are several formats out there. DVD-R DVD+R and DVD-Ram are a few. Match up what your burner supports with the DVD's you are trying to use.

"I have a cd-writer adn a dvd-rom" - you can't write to any DVd with a DVD-Rom only drive. You need a DVD/RW drive and supporting software.
