Google Desktop Safe?

Is it safe to download google desktop to my work computer? Will others be able to hack into my computer to see my files using google? Can I be assured that I am the only one able to search my computer?

I have it on my PC. You can "disable advanced functions" which disables communications with the web. What that does is, keeps your search LIMITED to what's on your computer. So, your DESKTOP search remains on your desktop, and if you want to search the internet, you have to activate the browser.

Actually, this is a boon, to keep the Desktop from interrupting your each and every little desktop activity to send and receive internet transactions, which can be a real drag on your processing load! (Especially if you're a dialup user, like I was!)

You'll have to diddle the settings back and forth, for awhile, to get it JUST RIGHT. You'll have to pick and choose folders on your disk that you want EXCLUDED from indexing. (You probably don't need some of your program folders indexed, for example...saves some time that way!)

But, diddle the settings on the Google Preferences control panel, and you'll be just fine. Lots of neat gadgets, too!

Well first off, unless you own the company and control the security policy for all of your work's computers, your employer has a legal right to actually spy on you and everything on your computer. And most employers already do this.

An employer can look at anything that you do on your work computer. You have no privacy at all unless you encrypt your work. Everything is probably recorded too.

The Google Search program does have a "Lock Search" feature but that relies on the password used to login to your Windows computer.

So I wouldn't say it's that safe as it's pretty easy to bypass the login password by any skilled pc person with some hacking experience.

But again, that's a moot point since employers can easily spy on you and everything you do on your computer.

As an IT admin I frown upon this utility as it can wreak havoc on other programs and network connectivity. I experienced issues with several PCs that were not functioning properly and once we uninstalled that software they began to work normally again. There are admin tools out there that specifically look for this installation as it has been known to be problematic.

Put a password on you computer or when you install it click on the box just for me, so just you can use the programme if there are many accounts on the computer.
