8A + 5S = 1680

A + S = 240 , S = 240 - A

8A + 5(240 - A) = 1680
8A + 1200 - 5A = 1680
3A = 480
A = 160
S = 80

Let x be the general admission tickets
Let y be the student admission tickets
x + y = 240
x($8) + y($5) = $1680
Multiply the first eqn by -8 and add both eqns
-8x - 8y = -8(240) = -1920
-3y = -1920 + 1680 = -240
y = 240/3 = 80 students
x + 80 = 240
y = 240-80 = 160 general admission

Let S be the number of student tickets sold and let G be the number of general admission tickets sold.

8G + 5S = 1680
G + S = 240

So G = 240 - S

8(240 - S) + 5S = 1680
1920 - 8S + 5S = 1680
-3S = -240
S = 80

That means G = 160

let x be the number of genrel tickets
so 240-x will be the number of students
so:
8*x+5*(240-x)=1680
so
3x=480 ==> x=160

the answer:
genrel tickets that sold are 160
students tickets that sold are 240-160=80
