A GED is fine for what you want to do. You can go to a trade school (cosmetology) and/or a community college. Universities, however, are not likely to accept a GED unless the recipient has completed 2 years at a community college prior to transferring.
There is no such thing as a dumb question; only dumb answers.

No question is dumb when it comes to your education!

A diploma and GED are almost the same thing and are treated as such by most employers. Have you considered a summer program before fall classes for cosmetology? If you are only short 1 or 2 credits you could make them up and get your diploma in the fall through the mail. A GED basically tells everyone that you have an educational intelligence that would pass the 12th grade. It is a basic or general test.

Good luck to you :-)
