The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

Anti - Virus :
Anti-Virus' are a personal preference type.
You know what you want it to do and when, so you
want to look for what you want the AV to do specifically.
Some people like using FREE AV's which are okay for
the price, which they're some good AV's out there
that are free, some are bad as well.
I guess it comes down to what program that you like
the best and which one has the most pretty colors
that entertain your eyes.
AVAST
"Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition
avast! 4 Home Edition is a full-featured antivirus
package designed exclusively for home users and
non-commercial use. The company offers the Home
Edition free of charge, since, in our opinion, it
is possible to avoid global virus spreading by
efficient prevention; however, many users are not
able to or do not want to pay for antivirus software.
This page below will show you the most important
features of this program".

I agree with Samuel, Kaspersky is brilliant but NOD 32 is better if you don't have a powerful PC. I'd rate AVG as the best free antivirus.

I vote, AVG: http://www.grisoft.com
(As a side note: they just came out with a companion anti-spy-ware package, too. You can get both, as 30-day full-power trials, then either buy full-power or continue to run as what they call "limited-function" freeware. What the "limited-function" means, mostly, is, that you have to go fetch updates manually and do scans manually instead of having all that stuff happen on an automatic schedule...)

For me, Kaspersky's last version on my computer is giving me peace of mind :-)
No antivirus is 100% safe, but after many years of experience, this one is a compromise between using computer resources and having your computer protected as good as possible!
