A 2-by-2 system of linear equations contains two linear equations each with two unknowns such as

ax + by + c = 0
dx +ey + f = 0

where x & y are unknown and a,b,c,d,e,f are constants. A linear equation is one where none of the unknowns is raised higher than the first power.
