These small flies are called gnats. they live off the fresh peat soil and dead roots from household plants, If you dry your plant/plants out for 1 week you will rid these annoying little gnats. Also put your kitchen and bathroom sink stoppers in at night , this way they will have no place damp to hide

I have had luck with a mixture of dish soap and water. Spray the soapy water onto the leaves thoroughly and then water the plant also thoroughly with the soapy water as the bugs probably are in the soil. If you have more than one house plant you should do all at once. Good luck with it!

* * * * * Hello----I am a Certified Master Gardener. * * * * *

What you describe are soil gnats.

I get the same problem with my indoor plants, occasionally.

Fill your kitchen sink half full of water and place the potted plant in the water.

Fill the pot with water from the top.

Let the potted plant sit in water about 5 hours.

This will drown the soil gnats, their larvae and eggs.

With this method, there's no need for toxic chemicals, especially since you have a baby.

I sincerely hope this helps you.

I will re-pot this plant with new potting soil. You shouldn't give too much water and leave the soil on the dry side. I had the same problem before, then I heard that I was giving too much water on my house plant. It solved the problem, so it should work for you, too.

use raid bug spray after several hours and the flies are dead then wipe off with water and paper towel...the flies may be in the potting soil and not the plant...

1/4 inch of sand on top of soil will kill emerging young. Adults are short lived. These lovely little critters are a precursor of spider mites, the bane of all plantlings.

good luck
