Actually, this is not the first time that Buddhist monks protested against the ruling military government. A similar protest of such magnitude occured in 1988. The military used brutal means (firing their guns directly into crowds) to suppress that protest, resulting in 3,000 Buddhist protesters killed, hundereds of thousands arrested, jailed, and tortured, and forced many political opponents to flee into exile.
The ruling military junta will surely be using the same brutal methods this time as well. Unfortunately, the monks and the citizens doesn't have anything to fight the military with, being armed only with their indomitable will, courage and high spirits. Many people will die, with the rest of the world knowing so little about it (the military junta already imposed a total news blackout throughout the nation, banned all foreign journalists from entering the country, cut-off all telephone and internet connections, shut-down radio and television stations except for a few government channels).
The US had already imposed economic sanctions on Burma in 1997, but it was largely innefective because it hadn't changed the political situation at all.

The burmese gov. just announced there will be a curfew for 60 days, and banned gatherings of more than 5 people.... Hopefully the Burmese people have the stomaches to get together and defy the ban, but doing so 15 years or so ago got thousands of them killed. And as thugs worldwide learned after Tiananmen Sq., the world will forget a massacre given enough time.

I saw this on the news. I hope the monks can make an impact without much blood shed. I heard that the last time people protested 3,000 people were killed. It really is a sad situation.

You know it must be right if the Buddhist Monks are fighting for it. They are so laid back it's not even funny. Now they have finally got the people riled up and they are joining in too. Hope it all comes to a peaceful end and does not get out of hand, and they get what they want. Peace out!!!

i think that's a lie, nonetheless no count if that's no longer, i'm hoping they do no longer bypass by using WITH IT! in the event that they protest against MCR being a "suicide cult" and then they kill themselves, the completed message could have been neglected! And what do they think of will ensue the subsequent day? The daily Mail would be throughout it, blaming MCR, springing up much greater havoc. I say in basic terms bypass down there and protest peacefully, and then, on the top, bypass have fun. i'm for my area waiting for the media to be sure - i could pick to work out what bull they write bout the protest!

I am so happy to see them standing up for their rights! I do think that they will gather in defiance of the ban yet I fear for their safety. Bless them all....
