Being disabled (walk with a prosthethic) I find it extremely selfish on the individual's part, who is NOT handicapped, to park in a handicap zone.
I take a picture with my cel phone showing license plate, blue lined zone and lack of placard and then I send it to my local authorities and ask them to follow up with a citation or a "word of warning".
Sometimes it works; sometimes it does not.

I have a hand. tag and I often feel guilty for parking there if I'm not having a particularly bad day. Always feel paranoid that I'm being judged. "She don't look handicapped, how did she get that tag?"
For people who park in blue spots even w/o a tag, they should be fined to the hilt. The problem is that where I live, it is not enforced.
I just have ms, which gives me some bad days where my legs really hurt or whatever. If I don't need it to park close, I don't use it. I know someone with fibromyalgia though who got one just because she is lazy, and she doesn't deserve to have it. (that's not knocking ALL people with fibro; just an example of one person I know who doesn't deserve one)
There may very well come a day when I can't walk at all, and I will still appreciate having a tag to park close.

I haven't had my sticker for more than a year but it is disheartening when the spots are taken by those who seemingly don't need them. I've only got a leg amputation so I can go a bit farther than many .... it still ticks me off. I was always one of those college students who would use a form made from single sided sticky paper. It had some nasty saying on the front and I'd lay it right across the driver's side of the windshield. You needed a razor blade to get it off.
"Thanks for taking up a handicapped parking spot. These aren't for mentally handicapped."
I have grown up sinse that time.

I think it is completely ridiculous for a non-handicapped person to use these designated spots. I think that anyone that is disabled and forced to use a regular parking spot further away should have the right to give the offender a ticket (of course they would also need to carry around a camera for proof purposes). Also, being a disabled person myself (I have a genetic heart condition), I am young and apparently don't look like I have a disability. I get a lot of dirty looks from others. People should know that there are more disabilities than are outright noticeable.

I think they should be ticketed. Those are for handicapped people and should use thier sticker.
I worked in an office where there were 15 handicapped spaces and hardly any hnadicapped people. on the same token people who are not handicapped should not get the worst parking it should be distributed fairly. Its funny how the handicapped person can lobby for more spaces yet no one uses them once they get them, that was my only problem with this.

I think the government is being too liberal with the handicapped parking. I really think unless you are using a walking aid you should not use one. I've seen people get them for just a small mental illness and overweightness and people who have mild arthritis in their fingers, not feet. Just because they were on disability they got it. I have mild CP and most of the time my and I get the back parking spaces because there's too many parked cars and not enough spaces. I would never dream of using a handicapped badge just because me the passenger is mildly handicapped.

My grandma has one because she had a quadruple bi-pass done, hip replacement surgery, and has angina. If you just looked at her, you wouldn't think she was handicapped.
And when I drive her somewhere, you can bet I'm using that window card. I look totally fine when I get out. She looks totally fine when she gets out. But if she had to walk the same distance as anyone else from the middle or end spaces in the row, she would have a heart attack.
So, don't judge based on how people look when they get out of the car and walk just fine into the store.

If someone has the tag and is parked in the spot, that is fine. But if they are parked there and no tag, I think the fine should be VERY high. If you repeat it, go higher with the fine, maybe even loose the licenses for awhile, or jail time, or all the above.
I got the handicap tags for both of my parents. I keep the tags with me at all times as I am the one that drives them around and I never know which auto I am going to take them in. Even though I have the tags with me at all times, I would never park in one of those parking spots for love or money if one or both of my parents are not with me. I have taken my dad to town a few times and someone be in one of those spots, with no disability TAG. I would just sit and wait until they move from it and then get in that spot.
I know lots of people think it is ok to park in those spots. Even if their handicap is not noticeable, that is fine, park there......BUT have the tag.

I think you have a wonderful idea!!! I have been a caregiver and because of the additional hardships it has caused some of my clients I have waited near the car that was parked in the handicap space and just given them a piece of my mind- loudly so there is a lot of attention drawn to the jerk!

I think they should be receive a ticket and have to pay a hefty fine. In addition to that, they should be required to have to have an epidural for a whole day and be required to run errands and shop and do their daily activities AND not be able to use the handicapped parking slots but be required to park in the slot furtherest from the door.
I think that would reduce the problem of people using the handicapped parking slots that don't have a handicap, don't you? :o)
