The body of western philosophy is the outgrowth of the writings from the greatest minds to ever live and think. We call the group I refer to - philosophers.
While I can ascertain and appreciate the profound influence they wield upon our existence, I can also, perhaps, enjoy reading their works from time to time (as a pastime).
For me, it is Ayn Rand & F. W. Nietzsche who offer some level of enjoyment in this sense.

Your philosophy is a pastime?
Your opinions and beliefs determine how you perceive. How you perceive controls your thoughts. Your thoughts determine what you say and do. The environment responds.
How is shaping your environment a pastime?

The one philosophy that has placed me ahead without any disappointment whatsoever is, "Hope is nothing more than wishful thinking. It abrogates definitive focus and creates false friends whom are much worse than true enemies."--Sun Tzu
With this, I have kept friends far and few between keeping in mind that at any one time they can turn on me without any regard for our personal safety.
I count on myself most of the time because people have screwed my family over so much.
