I'm with yeah_but_we_all_are on this one. If you scan at a higher resolution, when you print it out there'll be no loss of quality (or should that be minimal loss of quality for all you photographers out there?).
As I don't have a Lexmark X1180 I'm afraid I can't point you in the direction of how to go about that except to say that you should be using the program that comes on the CD, and not simply pressing the button on the scanner itself ... if it has one.
Select here, at least 300 or 400 dpi and select 100%. This will, undoubtedly, give you a larger picture than you're attempting to get, but you can use any graphics package to 'shrink' it to the size that you want ... even Paint, if you're using Windows.

You can order the printer to give you a FIT TO PAPER print.. that will give you a 8 x 10 print.
But if you really want to have better pictures and some fun use a graphic editio program ,as Adobe photoshop or simple download one of the free popular programas, as www.xnview.com.
You install the software, then you open the imae you got, and RESIZE it.
If you scanned the photos for web use exclusively.. which is a less than 100k 72 dpi image, it wont print nicely... so yo better scan for 600dpi or 1200 dpi, and when printing, you RESIZE with your photo edition program, for at least 150 dpi..

i have a lexmark x1270 but got nothing to do with the scanner, when the photo is scanned it will pop up in the selected programme so you can save it, then when its saved say for example you want it in a word document just click on insert, picture, from file, select file then when it goes onto the document it should have arrows in the corners, to enlarge/make smaller just click on the arrows and drag to the desired size
