Can anyone please tell a program which will let me make a home network from a computer i have and so i can ultimately be able to use remote connection to make changes to the computer here on my laptop

I'm not fussy a version of linux or a program for windows

Hamachi. You can create your own private network. There are Windows and Linux versions. http://www.hamachi.cc

Not sure I understand the question. You want to be able to control a computer by remote?
Windows Remote Desktop does this very well. (built in WinXP Pro) VNC for linux, which I think is available for Windows too. There's a variety of tools to do this on MacOS, Linux, and Windows.
If over the net you will have to be connected all the time. You will need the IP address of the remote computer.
Anyplace control, MeLogIn, and others are third party add ons that do this too. Check out GoToMyPC.com.

Putty is a great program for Windows that can connect to a Linux system via SSH. In fact, I believe Putty can be used to connect to either Linux or Windows systems in the same way.

Most of the current windows versions will do what you want. Windows 98, XP and even Vista. XP Pro will have all the things you need built in. NO need to add additional programs.
