I am an American and I lived in Sao Paulo earlier this year. Frankly, despite what people say, I thought it was quite cheap in comparison to Chicago, where I have also lived. To keep rent down, try not to use a service aimed specifically at tourists, because the rent will likely be double what it would normally be. I lived in a decent apartment with internet, cable and a cleaning lady twice a week who did all my laundry too, and it set me back about $500 a month. Dining can be expensive as you want it to be, but a very good meal nin a nice restaurant with a drink will rarely cost more than $20. Clothing is quite cheap. A beer in a bar will be around $2. Some clubs however are quite expensive. I thought some of the nicer neighborhood were Jardims, Itaim Bibi, Pinheiros, Higienopolis, Vila Madalena, Vila Olimpia and Brooklin. Jardins is closest to the financial district, however large businesses can be found in various neighborhoods. You definitely don´t want to live in the old downtown area, which has a funky charm during the day, but is all hookers and thieves at night. For some reason, all the guidebooks mention little about the nieghborhoods I have listed, but a ton about the old downtown.

Sao Paulo remains the most expensive city in Latin America. Sao Paulo is now placed 62nd globally. The Brazilian Real has remained stable against the US Dollar over the last 12 months.
Cost-of-living indicators
Cost of an average two-day business trip (excluding flights) 1,120 reais
Monthly rent of a mid-priced one-bed furnished apartment 1,100 reais
Three-course dinner for four at a top restaurant 520-600 reais
Theatre or concert (four best seats) 400-480 reais
Other prices of interest:
Internet connection: R$3 - 5 per hour
Beer: R$ 2 - 3 per 600 ml bootle; R$ 1 - 2 per 350 ml can
Taxi: R$ 3 - 6 per km
Big mac: R$ 4 - 5; a comparable local sandwich goes for about half that price
A giant pizza: R$ 20 - 30
A cinema ticket: R$ 5 - 15

Sao Paulo is an expensive city however if you are making dollars then your life might be much easier and cheaper than of the brazilians.
Some areas in Sao Paulo are even more expensive than others. For instance neighborhoods such as Itaim, Higienopolis, Morumbi, are expensive areas but beautiful to live in.
Rents are usually around $600 dollars for a very nice apartment, one person can spend as much as I would say $400 in food per month. Going out in town is not as expensive as in USA but some bars and restaurants can be pricey too.
Anyways all depend if you are making dollar you should not worry much...

Like most big cities in the World SP can be expensive. One thing to keep in mind is that, you need to have a budget and live within your means.
If you are going to be working for an American Firm and getting paid in dollars even if it is not much by US standards, that means you can leave a pretty descent live in Brazil. For instance, 2,000 dollars a month it will get you close to 4,000 thousand Reais and with that you can leave decently there.

It depends on what kind of living you are talking about. But for a reasonable hotel in a good neighborhood, I would consider USD 150.00 / day. Transportation by taxi is not cheap for local money also we have bad traffic, but in US dollars would be almost half, since the exchange rate here is USD 1 = BRL 1.80. If you rent a car, you can have better deal, if you drive manual, automatic transmission is pretty expensive Food, also you have to consider your standards, a good dinner here can cost like USD 50.00 or more, if you consider Fogo de Chao barbecue restaurant. But you can get a decent meal in a less fancy restaurant for USD 25.00 Transportation between cities, depends on the distance. It is hard to forecast.

Apartment rent (1 bedroom+living room+bathroom+kitchen) + building maintenance fee=R$800 monthly
Grocery shop=R$300 monthly
Water+electricity+telephone+cable TV+broadband Internet=R$400 monthly
Transport (public bus)=R$140 monthly (2 tickets every day for 30 days period)
Weekend leisure (restaurants, pubs, movies...)=R$400 monthly
So, with R$2.040 you will be fine.
