Someone else asked a similar question, and one of the answers was chewing gum. I realized that on days I chew gum, I don't have symptoms of GERD. Try to find a sugar-free gum sweetened with xylitol.

Make sure you stay upright for at least 30 to 45 minutes after a meal. Don't eat less than three hours before bed.

Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus. You also should know some natural ways to treat your heartburn. Learn them here

The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.

There are a few herbs that can help reduce acidity in your stomach... but no supplement can make any medical claims on its own, so it can't claim to help Acid Reflux, for example.

Things like Ginger, DGL (licorice), Chamomile, Slippery Elm Bark, and Horehound Leaf are all good to help reduce acidity and calm the stomach..... plus there's Calcium Carbonate (an antacid)

I have a friend who swears by eating fresh parsley when she has indigestion/reflux but I don't know if it will help GERD

A teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of very warm water taken by mouth will make the reflux less painful and less erosive as it neutralizes the acid in your stomach. I would not recommend this for everyday use but for occasional treatments this is safe. This is not recommended for folks on low sodium diets.
