The bible is so full of contradictions it's not even funny. First it says Thou shall not kill then it goes on to say to kill your neighbor if he works on the sabbath. IMO Christians and Muslims are one in the same, they both kill in the name of God. If you don't believe me just pick up a book (other than that worthless piece of rag of the bible) or a newspaper and read it! Your hypocrisy sickens me!

Religion should unite all hearts and cause wars and disputes to vanish from the face of the earth, give birth to spirituality, and bring life and light to each heart. If religion becomes a cause of dislike, hatred and division, it were better to be without it, and to withdraw from such a religion would be a truly religious act. ~Abdu'l-Bahá

The Bible doesn't say anything. It's a book. It can't speak. But, a reading of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew (translated into English) indicates that the Commandment you cited reads: "Thou shalt do no murder".
And my religious beliefs are not pinned exclusively on the Bible. Especially the New Testament. With the exception of the Epistles, none of the books of the New Testament were contemporary writings. They were not written until decades after the death of Christ and were not codified until some 400 years later. My religious belief is based on the message delivered by Christ:
"You are loved. You are forgiven. You are saved".

It sounds like you need to study the Bible and learn what Thou Shalt Not Kill means

Well, first of all, not every country has every citizen with a mini armory at home.

many European countries for example have private ownership of firearms declared illegal.

One excuse some will use - is that " they " didn`t kill the animals that they eat, so they are innocent. Hogwash, i know, but still - some people do claim it.

Also, as to killing burglars - weird as it may sound, but isn`t that the risk of the job?
If you don`t want to get shot - stay out of peoples properties. No compassion for them from my end.

Once again, someone takes a verse out of the Torah and twists it around to suit their own social or political agenda.

Let me explain that unless you are well-read in Scripture, then you should NOT read something at face-value and apply 21st Century interpretations into historical documents.

Go to the link and learn.

Both Jewish and Christian theologians (the people who make it their life-work to study Scripture) agree that the Sixth Commandment refers to murder.
They also agree that killing in war or self-preservation is not covered in the Commandant.

Now - in regards to killing animals, you may find specific reference to that if you look at Leviticus, where all 613 Commandments are addressed.

Thou shalt not kill did not refer to the killing of animals. It only applies to the killing of other people. It also only refers to murder, not acts of war or self defense. On this last point there is some controversy. I think most of us don't have guns and many people are opposed to war. The Quakers are especially committed to peace.

The commandment is commonly translated into do not kill, but the true meaning and correct translation is "Thou shalt not murder"...there is a big difference between killing and murdering.

Sharon, and many others are right here. This doesn't include animals. And we do have a right to protect our families and the things we have earned and worked for. No one else has a right to them.
